Have you read the history of Groveton,
VA? Well, here is a brief summary for your pleasure.
A Brief History of Groveton, Virginia
Groveton Baptist Church (GBC) was a
mission church in 1942 and was officially constituted as an
independent church in April 1943. Times were different then:
-
The United States was in the midst of
World War II.
-
The chief industrial export from the
area was baled waste paper.
-
Fairfax County was just beginning to
transition from an agricultural to an urban area.
-
U. S. Route 1 had very few streetlights
and stop signs, although it was the main road between
Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia.
-
The first 2 ½ mile section of the
Shirley Memorial Highway, from the Pentagon to Leesburg
Pike (Route 7) wasn’t open yet.
-
Neither the Interstate system nor the
Capitol Beltway were on the drawing boards.
-
Both Beacon Mall and Hybla Valley were
airports, rather than shopping malls. Dulles International
Airport wasn’t even a concept. (Beacon Mall was not named
after an airport beacon. Near where Collard Street is
today, there was an air raid beacon intended to warn the
Groveton area of an air attack during World War II. It was
from this air raid beacon that Beacon Mall and Beacon Road
got their names)
-
There was a very strong work ethic.
-
Most residents had to use well water
and septic tanks. What sewer systems Fairfax County did
have flowed into the Potomac River untreated. (The water
for GBC’s first church building came from a well just
inside the East basement wall of the original building
(under what is now East Hall in what also used to be a
furnace room).
-
County fire departments were all
volunteer. Fairfax County didn’t begin paying its fire
fighters until 1949.
-
There was a County Police Department,
but there were no substations. Groveton received the first
substation, but that didn’t open until 1947.
-
There were few parks. The Fairfax
County Park Authority was established in 1950.
