A Brief History of Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania
John Harris/Simon Cameron Mansion & Museum
Built by John Harris Jr. in 1766 and
extensively renovated by Simon Cameron after he purchased it
in 1863, this well preserved historic home is now a museum
centering on the families that have occupied it through the
centuries. Tours of the mansion are available. The house is
infused with African American history, although it might not
be reflected in the tour. The Harris family held African
American slaves for several generations and succeeding
owners employed African American servants. Lincoln's first
Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, who bought the house in
1863, was an early supporter of using African Americans as
soldiers during the Civil War. When the local African
American community welcomed African American troops home
after the war, the troops paraded to the mansion to visit
Simon Cameron, who was the only white public figure honored
during the homecoming. The headquarters and library of the
Historical Society of Dauphin County are located directly
behind the house.
