How to select a good mover?

Make sure your mover is licensed and insured. Check local organizations to determine if the movers have a good record of service. Once you have received your estimate for services, compare price and services offered. Ask to have your estimate explained in detail. Make sure you have a written copy of the estimate.

Make sure the following information has been supplied to you:
  • The rates and charges that will apply.
  • The mover's liability and what claims protection you have.
  • How pick-up and delivery will work.

Do you providing Valuation & Insurance ?

Movers USA, Inc. offers the standard $.60 per pound valuation on all local moves to cover any loss or damages. Some of our customers may need more coverage than valuation can provide. If you have questions about valuation coverage, please call your CMC, Certified Moving Consultant for answers.

If you feel more comfortable with additional coverage, your homeowner's insurance policy may offer protection for your move. You may be asked to pay a special premium to cover your belongings during the move. Some policies do have provisions at no cost to the owner.

If you find that your homeowner's policy does not cover moving protection or provide enough coverage, there is the option of writing a full-replacement policy through a third party underwriter.

We can help you apply for coverage with a third party insurance company. All you have to do is click here to download the application form. Fill it out and return it to your CMC no later than three business days prior to your move. If you need assistance in completing the form, we will gladly help you. After you have sent the completed forms back to us, we will collect the premium for you, and then your household goods will be properly insured.

What should I keep in mind regarding scheduling?

It is important to remember that moving is a seasonal business with peak months being May-September. If you are planning a move during these months, we recommend making your reservation 4-6 weeks in advance. Also, the last and first few days of the month are especially busy, so please plan accordingly.

Where are you located?

Movers USA is located in Baltimore, Maryland. Our large fleet of state of the art trucks and equipment means that we can provide long distance moves to 48 states and local moves to most metropolitan areas.

Why do movers put more than one household shipment on a trailer in a long distance move?

We do this for efficiency and to keep the costs down. We do have direct shipments available, but most customers choose to have their moves done in the standard way so that it will be more affordable.

What is partial packing?

Partial packing is the packing, wrapping or crating of glass tops, all sizes of TV sets, pictures, mirrors, glass items, lamps, china cabinets, and all upholstered furniture.

Do you charge for packing materials?

Any materials that are requested or used by your moving team ( boxes, packing paper, tape, etc) will be charged additionally.

What is full packing?

The mover will enter your residence and pack everything for you. It is recommended that you retain any valuables, medicines, legal papers with you for the move.

Will packing materials be on the truck if I need them?

Yes, our crews come fully prepared. If you find that you need something, it will be available.

Can we help the movers?

For insurance reasons, customers are not allowed on the truck, so the best way to help is to be prepared before hand. Have all your packing done, boxes labeled, etc. This will allow our crew to do their job efficiently.

What is valuation protection?

It is the maximum protection a moving company will be liable for if an item is damaged during transit. $.60/lb per item.

What does $.60/lb per item mean?

If you have an item damaged and it has to be replaced, it will be replaced at a value determined by taking the weight of the item times $.60/lb.

Why should I purchase insurance instead of valuation?

Insurance will offer protection

Does my homeowners' policy cover my items for a move?

Most homeowners' policies do not provide coverage. Call your company to see if they can supply you with coverage for a special premium. Make sure the policy includes coverage while your goods are in the movers/ possession and not just while the movers are in your residence.

What if I need something hoisted?

If you know that you have an item that will need to be hoisted , you will have to contact a hoisting specialist., as we do not provide that service. You should make the arrangements at a time when it will not interfere with the rest of the move.

Can you move plants?

It is against the law to transport plants across state lines. On local moves Federal Regulations allow a mover to transport plants if the trip is fewer than 15 miles. However, we cannot guarantee their safety. In general, we recommend that you make arrangements to transport your plants.

What are additional services?

Any service that is provided, in addition to the line haul is typically an additional service. These can include crating,packing, unpacking, appliance services, special handling, stairs, long carries or shuttle service if access to your residence is limited and a second smaller truck is necessary. Your moving consultant can fully explain the range of services and charges.

What is Cash on Delivery (COD) ?

This means payment is required at the time of delivery (before unloading) at the destination residence (or warehouse).

What are the Accessorial (Additional) Services ?

These are services such as packing, appliance servicing, unpacking, or piano stair carries that you request to be performed (or that are necessary because of landlord requirements or other special circumstances). Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charges.

What are the Advanced Charges ?

These are charges for services performed by someone other than the mover. A professional, craftsman, or other third party may perform these services at your request. The mover pays for these services and adds the charges to your bill of lading charges.

What are the Appliance Service by Third Party ?

The preparation of major electrical appliances to make them safe for shipment. Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charges.

What is Bill of Lading ?

The receipt for your goods and the contract for their transportation.

What is a Carrier ?

The mover transporting your household goods.

What is Certified Scale ?

Any scale designated for weighing motor vehicles, including trailers or semi-trailers not attached to a tractor, and certified by an authorized scale inspection and licensing authority. A certified scale may also be a platform or warehouse type scale that is properly inspected and certified.

What is the Estimate, Binding ?

This is an agreement made in advance with your mover. It guarantees the total cost of the move based upon the quantities and services shown on the estimate.

What is the Estimate, Non-Binding ?

This is what your mover believes the cost will be, based upon the estimated weight of the shipment and the accessorial services requested. A non-binding estimate is not binding on the mover. The final charges will be based upon the actual weight of your shipment, the services provided, and the tariff provisions in effect.

What is the Expedited Service ?

This is an agreement with the mover to perform transportation by a set date in exchange for charges based on a higher minimum weight.

What is a Flight Charge ?

A charge for carrying items up or down flights of stairs. Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charges.

Do you have Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service ?

This is an additional level of service featuring guaranteed dates of service. Your mover will provide reimbursement to you for delays. This premium service is often subject to minimum weight requirements.

What are High Value Article ?

These are items included in a shipment valued at more than $100 per pound ($220 per kilogram).

What are the Household Goods ?

As used in connection with transportation, means the personal effects or property used, or to be used, in a dwelling, when part of the equipment or supplies of the dwelling. Transportation of the household goods must be arranged and paid for by you or by another individual on your behalf. This may include items moving from a factory or a store when you purchase them to use in your dwelling. You must request that these items be transported, and you (or another individual on your behalf) must pay the transportation charges to the mover.

What are the Line Haul Charges ?

The charges for the vehicle transportation portion of your move. These charges, if separately stated, apply in addition to the accessorial charges.

What is a Long Carry?

A charge for carrying articles excessive distances between the movers vehicle and your residence. Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charges.

What is the definition of a Mover ?

A motor carrier engaged in the transportation of household goods and its household goods agents.

What is the Order (Bill of Lading) Number ?

The number used to identify and track your shipment.

What is the Order for service ?

The document authorizing the mover to transport your household goods.

When are the Peak Season Rates ?

Higher line haul charges applicable during the summer months.

What are the Pickup and Delivery Charges ?

Separate transportation charges applicable for transporting your shipment between the storage-in-transit warehouse and residence.

What is Reasonable Dispatch ?

The performance of transportation on the dates, or during the period of time, agreed upon by you and your mover and shown on the Order for Service/Bill of Lading. For example, if your mover deliberately withholds any shipment from delivery after you offer the binding estimate or 110 percent of a non-binding estimate, your mover has not transported the goods with reasonable dispatch. The term reasonable dispatch excludes transportation provided under your movers tariff provisions requiring guaranteed service dates. Your mover will have the defense of force majeure, i.e., that the contract cannot be performed owing to causes that are outside the control of the parties and that could not be avoided by exercise of due care.

What is a Shuttle Service ?

The use of a smaller vehicle to provide service to residences not accessible to the movers normal line haul vehicles.

What is a Storage In Transit (SIT) ?

The temporary warehouse storage of your shipment pending further transportation, with or without notification to you. If you (or someone representing you) cannot accept delivery on the agreed-upon date or within the agreed upon time period (for example, because your home is not quite ready to occupy), your mover may place your shipment into SIT without notifying you. In those circumstances, you will be responsible for the added charges for the SIT service, as well as the warehouse handling and final delivery charges. However, your mover also may place your shipment into SIT if your mover was able to make delivery before the agreed-upon date (or before the first day of the agreed upon delivery period), but you did not concur with early delivery. In those circumstances, your mover must notify you immediately of the SIT, and your mover is fully responsible for redelivery charges, handling charges, and storage charges.

What is the Valuation ?

The degree of worth of the shipment. The valuation charge compensates the mover for assuming a greater degree of liability than is provided for in its base transportation charges.

What is the Warehouse Handling ?

A charge may be applicable each time SIT service is provided. Charges for these services may be in addition to the line haul charges. This charge compensates the mover for the physical placement and removal of items within the warehouse.
